Rhapsody In Taps
Saturday, October 23, 2010
244 South San Pedro
Los Angeles, CA 90012
What an amazing
display of speed and density of sound! The number of separate
taps heard by this audience was proportional to the number of
performers executing them. The rhythm was inexorable, spreading
from one side of the stage to the other. The separate figures
became part of it and the footlights flickered to it. Yes, the
rhythm was so dominating that for days afterward, I might
subconsciously adapt whatever I am doing to its demands.
I loved the
magnificent patterns and designs throughout. The two numbers
that stand out (not including the finale): Melrose Freilachs
performed by Gabe Copeland, Bob Carroll and Caley-Ryan Carr and
Foil/Copper, Zinc, Brass performed by Linda Sohl-Ellison
and Monti Ellison really hit the top!
·
Melrose Freilachs
performed by Gabe Copeland, Bob Carroll and Caley-Ryan Carr: I
was so awed and caught up in the exuberant tension brought on by
those fabulous male dancers! …a dialogue of rhythm, motion, and
witty repartee, all clearly illustrated. The ease and precision
with which the dancers followed the music were the biggest
points to me.
·
Foil/Copper, Zinc, Brass
performed by Linda Sohl-Ellison and Monti Ellison: Linda’s feet
were drumsticks as amenable to control as the drummer’s; notes
long and short, dull and sharp---she had all the drum’s
variety. I could sit back and absorb what she was doing. I
could feel and be in the moment with her dance.
On another note,
being up close in the Hoofer’s Circle you see the feet,
the face,—the “bleep”. It can happen to anyone, even an
old pro like Bob Carroll. Being a novice tapper I looked over
to a veteran tapper (Peggy Padilla) and she affirmed that
indeed, Bob Carroll instantly recovered from a moment of
‘forgetting his step’ during his solo “Come Together”. Unless
you were right there under his feet and with a clear vision of
his face, you wouldn’t know or recognize the hesitation/brain
lapse, if you will. Quickly recovering without noticeable
detection, the pro carried on the remainder of the routine
flawlessly. Wow.
What is most
provocative about Rhapsody in Taps is the appearance of
“refreshing spontaneity” that pervaded the entire performance.
There was exactness in “tricky” time, but the control of a good
variety of sounds. The dancers added volumes of body
expressions—arm pumping, shaking, jiggling—to their movements on
the floor. Thus, bodily interpretation of the beat was
achieving its place. Graceful and impeccably dressed, moving
together and apart across the stage, making every move a
beautiful picture, these dancers aspired to perfection in
everything they performed.
Percussion is an emotional release: taps and
drumsticks alike flying! Hence, I’ve come to conclude that tap
dance and its brother the drum is an oral language. It
functions as an oral poetry that shapes acoustic space, as a
rhythmic language that expresses “acute Hiberian wit.” And like
poetry one can only say so much, the rest is felt, experienced
and sensed.

"Come and
hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for
my soul." Psalm 66:16
Eyewitness News
I first met Peggy in
1993,
when we were each performing Tap solos at the Del Mar
Fair
and discovered we both lived at Lake San Marcos. We
began working together as a duet and studied "Rhythm
Tap" at Mira Costa College for 4 years, additionally
taking workshops from numerous well known
Master teachers and performers. We both loved it, worked
well together, and became close friends. We competed and
won first place in many competitions , where we had to
compete
against dancers (some were
large groups) who were 20
years our junior. We were in the "40 Plus" Category and
we were in our 60's. Shining moments were when we won
the "Dancer of the Year"Award for both 1995 and 1996 in
International competitions.

We struggled with a four foot trophy coming home on the
plane. Peggy always insisted I keep the trophies at my
house, and only recently did I donate 14 of them to the
San Marcos Boys and Girls Club.
Peggy
and I performed as "The Taptones Rhythm Tap Duo" for 7
years.
I
directed the Ms Sr SD Pageant from 1994 to to 1997 and
all that time tried to get Peggy to compete. She
said,"No way am I going to parade across the floor in
high heels and an evening gown-that's not me!!" After
much prodding she finally relented and , by golly, she
was hooked! I helped her with her gowns, talked her into
manicures and pedicures, helped tame her stubbornly
curly hair into a new style and supported her in any way
I could. I knew Peggy would do very well with her
talent-she is an INCREDIBLE tap dancer-But, I also knew
that she is intelligent, dedicated, outgoing, and would
be a great ambassador for Senior America.
Well,
for those who don't know Peggy- she can come across as
a strong-willed, dedicated perfectionist. But that's how
she got where she is today! She has worked so hard all
her life to come to this point. She is not just a
talented dancer-she is an incredible woman who can be
such an asset to the Senior America community!
I'm
proud to be her friend and fellow dancer, and stand
behind her all the way!

Peggy Padilla
2009 Winner of the
Talent Award
and
Crowned the New Ms.
Senior California 2009
August 22, 2009
A night was a
night to remember!
Dazzling performances and incredible talent!
One magnificent person truly stood out amongst them all!
Ms.
Senior San Diego, Peggy Padilla was crowned Ms. Senior CALIFORNIA!
She dazzled the judges with her Eleanor Powell-like footwork as she
tapped the 12th Street Rag! Out performing the truly great opera
singers whom many murmured were sure shots at the talent award.
Peggy Padilla won the talent award first then as the drama played on
with the runner-ups, Peggy's name was called as the new Ms. Senior
California. Shock was on her face and she was 'speechless'.
Saturday, August 22,
2009 competing amongst many talented, intelligent and glamorous
seniors as much as 18-years her junior! The truly breath-takingly
talented PEGGY PADILLA, 78-years young has won indeed!
In review— what clinched it for her?
Personal Interview stage:
I wasn’t there so I don’t know what transpired, but I
can assure you (having interviewed Peggy myself in the
past), she interviews exceedingly well because her words
come from her heart and soul, not from the political
polls that mandate what people want to hear. Give
her a question and she’ll give you an answer. Look
at her eyes, she listens 100%. You have her full
attention. What does that tell you?
Formal Attire:
It wasn’t just that she
looked fabulous in her stunning red gown and walked like a gazelle
dancing in the familiarity of the woods and forest,— she carried an air
about her, one of that which we see in people who are confident in
themselves, their lives, their values their actions. It is the
difference between one who walks wondering how she is being ‘seen’ and
one who walks comfortably in her own skin. If she hugs you, it’s
because she wants to. If she smiles, it’s because her heart is smiling.
 |
 |
|
 |
 |
Talent:
Inasmuch as she is
comfortable in her own skin, she doesn’t have a ‘comfort zone’,—
still wanting to improve her dance skills and choreography, Peggy
delights in learning newer more challenging steps! Your
typical artist likes the success of knowing what pleased the
audience and tend to repeat (rather drive it to the ground) and
replay that same thing until it grows stale without ever realizing
it. Not Peggy. Her creative and adventurous mind says, “if
you liked that . . then I’ll not replay it thinking you didn’t get
it the first time . . instead I’ll throw in a new twist to show you
a new land under this kingdom of heaven!”

 |
Peggy is the
23rd Ms. Senior California and the 1st dancer ever
to win in talent and event! |
